Well...it doesn’t sound like a Subaru. If that sounds like damning with faint praise its only because it is.
Granted I wont have a full judgement until I hear it in person but here it sounds muted and, well, if an engine can sound unintelligent...this one does. Its like the legend of lunk through a muffler.

Equal-length primaries to the turbo? I mean, that’s what makes all the STI bros sound alike: the unequal primaries.

Yeah, I assume so, it doesn’t sound quite as mentally challenged as the STI bros.

Unpopular opinion: I really like the “boxster whine” that the past/current gen six cylinder made.

The whine?

In the 986 generation when you would hit about 3000-3500 RPM you would get a high piched noise, almost like a supercharger whine.

That’s an unpopular opinion? Well shit I’m with you on liking it

Closer to the FA20 (equal length headers)

yeah

Sounds like butt. And I wish they’d quit milking their heritage so hard. It’s what companies do when the product isn’t good enough to stand by itself.

Yeah it doesn’t sound bad, but it doesn’t sound great or really inspiring like the howl of a flat 6 either. Can’t hear it too much through the dramatic music, but maybe it’s better in person

Agree on both points. Though I do think the 718 will be a great car.

Sounds about like what you’d expect a turbo 4 to sound through a decent set of resonators/mufflers, which is to say not exactly great.

Thats what I was thinking...there are people that think the flat 6 sounds bad?

I wonder what the max speed you can operate the roof at is?

The stock Subaru Flat 4 sounds bored when revving and at high rev sounds like it doesn’t want to be there. So long as this likes to rev freely, half the battle of sounding decent is already won. This will be a fantastic car, I just hope they don’t launch the price into the stratosphere. It kinds reminds me of the 914 in a good way.

A nice thrummy little four sounds great in a Panda or an MX-5 or something, but not really in a $56,000 convertible Porsche.

Great how? Sure it’ll be fast and fuel efficient but so is every other remotely sporty car on the market. The biggest problem is that it will be less soul-stirring than its predecessor.

Still unimpressed. I hope they get it right though.
